SOUTH AFRICA'S FAVOURITE RENTAL COMPANY CHOOSES DIGICO

Not for the first time, South Africa-based Sound Stylists was voted Favourite Sound Rental Company at the TPSA Awards 2007. The company is odds on favourite to scoop the award once again this year as it has enhanced its inventory with the purchase of a DiGiCo D5 console.

Sound Stylists, founded in 1987 by owner Kevin Glover, provides two main services: ‘dry hire’ of equipment and production which includes rock concerts and other live events, broadcast, theatre, studio recordings, sport and corporate events. The company is constantly expanding its inventory, and prides itself in keeping pace with technology and developing trends. An example of this is the investment in the D5, which has already been used on many local and international concerts.

“We were left short on digital desks in September and I had been toying with getting a D5,” says Glover. “We wanted something that was able to offer more than 48 channels and that came as a complete package so we didn’t have to run around making up input and multi racks. DiGiCo could provide all of that and more and was able to ship in the available time frame.”

Sound Stylists’ console inventory is made up of a mix analogue and digital desks from many different manufacturers. When it came to the transition from these other desks to the D5, Glover says, “It’s been easy, w e had no problems at all. There are ‘shortcuts’ that are nice to know and you find them when you are using the desk regularly and with other operators.”

One of the first jobs the D5 was used for was a function for one of the large mining houses in South Africa. “ We had three bands coming in on the desk and all were kept separate, so in total we used around 50 odd channels,” says Glover of the set-up. “As we had time and space constraints, we elected to use only the D5’s internal effects and were more than happy with the results.”
