RESURRECTION LIFE CHURCH - NEEDS FULFILLED

Since 1967, Resurrection Life Church has been spreading the word in Grandville, Michigan. The Senior Pastor, Duane Vander Klok, and his charismatic style has helped to increase congregation numbers to the point where expansion became a necessity and, with this, a new audio system.

“We began the actual construction phase of our facilities’ expansion about two years ago,” explains Cliff Rosenberg, Technical Director at Resurrection Life. “We had changed all the production systems’ consulting firms from the initial ones that had started the project over five years prior, settling on Acoustic Dimensions of Dallas, TX as the main audio systems design group.

“We talked through the different possibilities for audio consoles and how we were going to move forward with enhancing our abilities to use non-traditional methods to support the communication of the message of the Church to people not just in our local area, but also far outside our community via Internet and television broadcast, including satellite networks in foreign countries.

“Our director of television ministries had expressed a desire to do ‘on the fly’ production of audio for broadcast as much as possible, DiGiCo are uniquely positioned to cover that for us, as well as provide the Front of House and Monitor consoles that would all connect together via fibre optics and share the mic/line inputs from stage without the traditional massive transformer “split” that is normally used.

“I had initially known of the DiGiCo products by way of a previous business relationship with their US Sales Manager, Allan Nichols, when he was national sales manager for another brand of analogue audio consoles. When he moved to DiGiCo he asked me if I would like to come to Nashville and “test drive” the DiGiCo D5 Live console that they had set up for demo sessions.

“It only took me about 20 minutes to get the feel of what the console was about and I immediately started to think of various problems we were facing that the feature set of a DiGiCo could easily solve!

“So, when we were making the final design plans with Acoustic Dimensions we looked at DiGiCo and another large-format digital console and agreed that the DiGiCo products would fill the current needs we had and provide us with easy and cost-effective paths to continue to grow in the future.”

A major factor in the decision making process was that, like most churches, Resurrection Life does not have a large full-time technical staff. This meant that the consoles they chose needed to be very powerful, yet not confusing to someone who is not a seasoned audio professional.

“Additionally, the DiGiCo consoles scale well,” adds Rosenberg, “and the deeper you dig into them, the more you find the features to do some very difficult routing and audio processing. Or you can just operate them like a traditional analogue console and still not feel like you were “oversold” at all, due to the fact of the incredible EQ and dynamics on each channel, plus the musical effects processors that the DSP of each mixer provides you.”

At the Front of House position the church has a D5 Live 112EX with a full DSP engine, giving 112 mic/line inputs onstage with a 96-channel console layout and six digital effects processors plus 32 IPC processors. All stage inputs can also be captured via local MADI I/O to a rack-mount PC DAW and used as backups for post production or played back for use in volunteer training sessions outside live service times.

A custom configured D1 Live runs monitors, giving 112 stage inputs with a 96-channel surface and six digital effects plus 16 IPC processors. There are 22 aux fed wireless IEM feeds in stereo and mono, plus three 16-channel outputs on the new Aviom output modules for the band monitor system fed from channel direct outputs.

Meanwhile, the Broadcast Audio room has a DiGiCo DS-00 with a full DSP engine giving a 160-channel surface via the 16 channel faders on the master section, plus two eight channel expander wings. The DSP engine also has six effects engines available for adding the needed processing to the various broadcast outlets. There are also 96 tracks of non-linear hardware that capture to disk with full timecode and are easily controlled via a nine pin remote link from the DS-00.

“The console has broadcast software option for mix-minus and Back Stop PFL that really make the job of live broadcast audio a lot easier for our operators,” says Rosenberg. “Not to mention the full console automation for post production sessions when needed.

“We have been using the full system for about a month now and have been extremely pleased with the stability and sound of all three units. We looked at several other options, but DiGiCo was the only company that was able to meet the needs of our project. The service aspect was a big concern, and they have not disappointed us in any way with their knowledge and availability. The US office in California has been great to work with and they are always available if we have a question about anything on the consoles. I have watched the recently available offerings in the digital console realm but, after looking at what they have to offer versus the DiGiCo products and the price to value ratio they present, I have not ever doubted that the choice we made was the right one for today and our future needs”.
