DIGICO D5T IS THE ONLY CHOICE FOR MATADOR'S MONITORS

When monitor technician Claus Pedersen was tasked with working on perhaps the most complex Danish musical production of 2007, he had to choose a console which could cope with an entire symphony orchestra, backing band and no less than 28 actors / singers.

The event was the Danish Radio Concert Orchestra’s musical version of ‘Matador’, which played to sold out audiences at Copenhagen’s Operaen for three weeks in June. With 35,000 tickets sold for the 22 performances, Claus needed ultra-reliability from a console, as well as one that could handle an extremely complex production. He chose the DiGiCo D5T supplied by European Tour Production, Copenhagen.

Named after the Danish word for a business magnate, Matador aired on Danish television between 1978 and 1981, but has been regularly repeated and issued on video / DVD since. Set in the fictional Danish town of Korsbæk between 1929 and 1947 and telling the story of a struggle between two of the town’s high profile families, it is an icon of the country’s dramatic output and so the musical version was always going to be a major event.

“On similar large-scale events in the past, I have been forced to use two or three analogue or digital consoles,” says Claus. “This time, however, I was determined to be able to do everything on just one.

“I have used DiGiCo D5s at both FOH and monitor positions on events for Danish Radio, so I was familiar with its flexibility and excellent sound quality,” he continues. “The D5T is the only console that gives me those advantages, plus allows me to do all the monitor mixes on one surface.”

Claus had the console literally ‘maxed out’, using 96 mic inputs and eight AES/EBU inputs, with 32 line outputs, eight AES/EBU outputs plus two Aviom cards providing another 32 outputs.

“Using the D5T meant that I was able to handle all 96 inputs without having to be dependant on a sub mix from the Front of House console,” says Claus. “And, at the same time, I could deliver two lots of 16 sub-mixes for two rings of Aviom Personal monitor systems which went to the symphony orchestra and the backing band.”

For the actors and dancers, the D5T provided a further 10 stereo in-ear monitor mixes, plus effects send and feeds to backstage loudspeakers for offstage monitoring. “I had everything set up on cues, which the D5T handles very effectively,” says Claus. “It made it possible to very quickly and easily refine the mixes for everybody involved, including conductor David Furman. It ensured that everybody had their monitoring requirements fulfilled without any undue delay and resulting problems.”

With music by Bent Fabricius-Bjerre,lyrics by Clemens and produced by Peter Langdal the 2007 production of Matador was so successful that a new season was immediately announced for 2008.
